The 2000s – or “The Aughts” as we ought to call it – gave us some fantastic movies like Lord of the Rings and The Departed. However, it also gave us such cinematic stinkers as Gigli and From Justin To Kelly. Either way, the decade of global communication and instant-connectivity definitely gave us some of the best movie posters of all time.
As we kicked off the new millennium (yo excuse me, Willenium), movies and their posters started experimenting with visual effects and graphic styles. Art as a whole saw an incredible revolution of sorts through the technological advancement of the 2000s.
What makes a movie poster one of the “best”? The answers are all subjective. Sometimes, it’s the iconic nature of a film or the character that makes a poster so good. Other times, the clever execution of a design idea is what makes a movie poster so brilliant.
More often than not, I lean towards an eye-catching design-heavty poster, smart use of color and space, or impactful and iconic imagery. Above all, however, my favorite movie posters are the ones that perfectly captures a particular tone, be it design style or visual aesthetic.
This list of the 50 best movie posters of the 2000s is my personal selection of well-executed poster designs. Some are smart, simple Saul Bass inspired designs. Others are gorgeous Drew Struzan illustrations. Even just a bold color palette with creative typography and a strong image can get you a spot on this list.
There are no rules here. Art is subjective. All of these posters caught my attention for one reason or another. Check it out for yourself and see if they catch your attention too!
