Sony recently released the second official full trailer for this fall’s anti-hero horror film, Venom. While the first Venom trailer only gave us a glimpse of the symbiote creature and focused more on revealing the plot, this newest one really gives us the goods.
Venom marks the fourth in a recent string of darker-toned anti-hero films. Following in the footsteps of Fox’s Deadpool movies and the Oscar-nominated Logan, Sony seems to be turning up the heat in the horror department with Venom. Although not-yet-rated, the imagery and tone could lend itself to an R-rating.
While technically part of Spider-man’s world, Venom seems to be making a concerted effort to be a stand-alone origin story and set its own tone. Venom also mark’s Sony’s first significant attempt to branch out with a diversified Marvel universe of their own.
This film is technically a superhero film, but the new Venom trailer would have you think otherwise. Uniquely, this film aims to show you the origin story of a villain-turned-antihero. Reporter Eddie Brock (played by USDA-certified Prime Grade Beefcake Tom Hardy) gets in over his head attempting to uncover the questionable experiments of the Life Foundation. Inevitably, this leads to Brock being overtaken by a cosmic creature known as a Symbiote.
In this trailer, we see the horrors of the Life Organization’s experiments up close as an unsuspecting patient gets devoured by horror-goop. Also, we see our first few interactions between Eddie Brock and the Symbiote. These are some of the most intriguing scenes in the entire trailer.
First off, we see several scenes of they symbiote slowly consuming Brock’s body and mind. The stylization in Tom Hardy’s panicked screaming and frantic fighting gives the film’s tone a real edge. Not only that, but there are some great moments of internal dialogue between Eddie and the Symbiote. Finally, the trailer gives us a few gorgeous glory shots of Venom in all their horrific glory. We also get our first glimpse at the movie’s main creature villain, Riot.
The CGI for this film looks truly terrifying, and I mean that in the best way possible. Tendrils and teeth and seething saliva, Venom looks downright scary. Some scenes in specific look as if they were pulled directly from a nightmare. Interestingly, this new Venom trailer cuts the generally-gritty and twisted tone with a few moments of dark humor. These moments of levity ground the film in its comic-book roots.
If nothing else, this new Venom trailer shows that Sony is listening to comic book fans’ overwhelmingly-positive responses for unique, against-the-grain superhero films. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe perfecting textbook superhero movies and the DC Universe seemingly failing to follow suit, Sony is smart to think outside of the box.
Fox made great strides with Deadpool and Logan in broadening the definition of a superhero movie and showing that harder, grittier, and more adult-themed comic book movies play well with audiences. We’ll see if Sony can capitalize on this trend and break the model of traditional superhero cinema with their new antihero horror excursion, Venom.
The film hits theaters everywhere October 5th!
