A “Venom” solo film has been in the works for a little over a decade now. In 2007, fans and critics alike panned the third installment of director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, Spider-Man 3. The film suffered from Sam Raimi’s decision to focus on his own personal favorite classic villains. As a result, pressure from producers to include newer fan favorites left Venom feeling pigeon-holed. The film also suffered from a severe lack of Venom poster advertisements, leaving fans with a half-assed Superman knock-off poster instead.
Soon after that film’s release, producer Avi Arad announced his intentions to make a Venom spinoff movie. However, as with many Hollywood projects, the film ended up in what many call Development Hell. This term means that, due to a multitude of reasons, the film never got past the development stage of production.
This decade-long delay is partially due to the changing landscape of superhero films. The Dark Knight would come out just one year after Spider-Man 3 and set the benchmark for quality superhero movies. The initial spinoff may have also been put on hold due to the fans’ negative reaction to a snarky Eric Foreman butchering one of their favorite characters.
Now, finally, after all but giving up hope for a Venom movie, the time is upon us. With Oscar-nominated actor Tom Hardy playing Eddie Brock and Zombieland-director Ruben Fleischer at the helm, it seems as though our fears can be put to rest. Ironic, given that the new Venom poster designs by Lindeman & Associates (LA) strike fear into all who gaze upon them.
In an interview given at the San Diego Comic Con this year, Fleischer discussed the brutal nature of the character and the film. “This is definitely a darker, more violent, more vicious Marvel character than I think anyone’s ever seen before,” exclaimed Fleischer.
Just this week, LA released new Venom poster designs that support that idea. Although the film is not yet rated, many fans are pushing for an R-rating. Others assume Sony will take the safe route and give it a “hard” PG-13 rating. Although the latter seems more probable, Fleisher still promises the film to be a violent affair.
A PG-13 rating may allow for a possible Tom Holland Spider-Man crossover in the future. Plus, if these Venom poster designs tell us anything, it’s that you don’t need R-rated content to instill a sense of brutality and terror.
The CGI creature designs for Venom look amazing, Tom Hardy’s performance seems eerie, and these new Venom poster designs look truly terrifying. Take a look for yourself, fraidy cat!
Venom looks pretty intense. Maybe you’re not ready for such a frightening film experience.
Maybe you’d rather see Ryan Gosling go to the moon.
