Quentin Tarantino’s sophomore directorial effort, Pulp Fiction (1994), did more than revitalize John Travolta’s career. The film’s success also did more than thrust Tarantino into a new class of film director for cinephiles to idolize and obsess over. Most importantly, Pulp Fiction spawned a dedicated following of die-hard fans unrivaled by most modern cinema.
Generations of film fans grew up knowing the film like the back of their hand. Like any cult classic, fans seemingly have the entire script memorized, ready to quote at a moment’s notice. Aspiring filmmakers never cease to insert at least one “Tarantino shot” into their student films (a stylized camera angle established as a Tarantino trademark in Pulp Fiction.) Also similar to other cult classics, Pulp Fiction has inspired an endless amount of unique fan art over the years.
These beautiful designs by MUTI are no exception. They feature two distinct vintage art styles utilizing the film’s striking red and yellow color palette.
The first is a set of Pulp Fiction trading cards designed in a vintage, minimalist playing card style. These gorgeous halftone-shaded pop-art portraits feature six main characters from the all-star cast. Distressed colors, retro fonts, and line-art illustrations contribute to the overall vintage design style.
However, it is the typographical title card that ties the entire set together. Everything from the 35 cent stamp to the 20th-anniversary ribbon makes this collection of designs feel timeless.
The second set of MUTI’s vintage Pulp designs make striking use of the vivid color palette. The tone is inspired by classic grindhouse film posters and illustrations, the same that inspired Quentin Tarantino’s entire career. Because of this, these illustrations seem ripped directly from the center of vintage pulp novels.
Like the card collection designs, MUTI uses distressed colors and grunge textures very effectively. These designs are soaked in the milieu of Pulp Fiction and the Tarantino Style.
Without further adieu, let’s take a closer look at these incredible illustrations.
