The 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle Predator spawned a cult following of ruthless, yet honorable, Yatuja-sympathizers for decades to come. Consequently, these die-hard fans have expressed their love of the series through countless Predator poster designs and illustrations. So, it is no wonder movie studios have continuously attempted to revamp the franchise throughout the years.
The producers of Predator 2 (1990) placed an Alien skull in a trophy case on the Predators’ spaceship as an easter-egg. This led to fans of both series losing their goddamn minds. After several video games and comic books, movie studios finally attempted to cash in on the crossover-fanbase with the film Alien vs. Predator (2004).
Despite somewhat poor reviews, the film did well enough at the box office to warrant a sequel. The 2007 Christmas release of Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, however, performed worse financially and received overwhelmingly negative reviews.
It wasn’t until 2010 that the studios tried once again to reboot the Predator franchise. Predators, under the production of filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids), attempted to rely on star power and a nostalgic revisiting of the dangerous jungle landscape. The film starred Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, and Cowboy Curtis himself, Laurence Fishburne.
Despite the relatively low ratings, this film seemed to breathe some life into the all-but-dead franchise.
Last week, director Shane Black’s The Predator (2018) marked the latest attempt by studios to recapture the magic of the first film. Without spoiling any details, the film seems to be generating relatively negative reviews overall. Although, as with many movies in recent history, the fanbase is split. Fans are already arguing over whether the film is indeed a “good” Predator movie.
However, there is a debate to be had as to whether ANY Predator film has lived up to the franchise’s true potential. Fans argue over the quality of every single movie released. With every new film, fans hold out hope for a truly vicious and violent version of the Yatjua.
This new film, with all its flaws, seemingly gives the fans a brutal and explosive visual experience. The initial reviews are generally negative. However, the scores on both Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB seem to rest comfortably within the range of every other installment.
Fans of the franchise are encouraged to see the film with a clear mind and form an opinion on their own. But, if you still need a little bit more inspiration to help hype you up, then you’ve come to the right place.
Regardless of the new film’s success, the Predator franchise remains one of the most highly-regarded action movies for sci-fi and monster movie fans alike. Talented artists from all across the world draw inspiration from the series to create absolutely stunning alternative movie posters.
